PUT THIS ON YOUR HIKING BUCKET LIST Buckskin Gulch is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwest, and while others are narrower, prettier or more challenging to explore, the length and variety of the terrain in the gulch make it the best overall. The canyon is narrow for 12 miles; the cliffs become steadily higher downstream, reaching a height of 500 feet above the streambed at the end, where Buckskin Gulch meets the Paria River which also flows through a deep canyon for several miles either side of the confluence. Buckskin Gulch is best done as a two-day canyoneering and backpacking adventure.  The route can be done in one very long day. The route is about 21 miles in total. WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE HIKE You will need a 40-foot rope for lowering backpacks and as a possible hand line.  Scrambling is required for a few places and expect to hike through water.  In normal conditions, there are several miles of ankle deep wading as well as a few waist deep pools.  An occasional swim is not unheard of.  The pools can be very cold so make sure to dry bag all the items you want to keep dry.  The canyon is rated 2B V using th [...]
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE ON THE COLORADO RIVER Lee's Ferry, a historical site, is the beginning of the Grand Canyon.  Located at the intersection of the Echo and Vermilion Cliffs, Lee's Ferry is praised as the most stunning spots along the Colorado River. Serving as the northern gateway to Arizona for 54 years- from 1873 to 1927, Lee's Ferry made the colonization of Arizona possible. WHITE WATER RAFTING The most popular activity to do here is River Rafting. Lee's Ferry is the primary launch point for Grand Canyon river trips. Check local companies to book a River Rafting trip. RAFTING ON YOUR OWN? If you have your own raft, and want to go down the river on your own, you can but you must contact the Colorado River Discovery to make reservations.  They will take you and your raft upstream from Lee's Ferry as cars are not allowed to be parked near the dam, due to Homeland Security. BRINGING YOUR DOG? Dogs ARE allowed on a leash in the Lee's Ferry camping area. However, they are NOT allowed on the Colorado Discovery riverboat that transports you and your raft upstream towards the Glen Canyon Dam.  If you are camping and want to do a day of floating down the L [...]
AMAZING OVERLOOK YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS Check out the Colorado River on it's way to the Grand Canyon.  Located in Glen Canyon, Horseshoe Bend is only a short drive from Page Arizona. Take a little hike up a sandy path to the overlook.  You won't be disappointed. DIRECTIONS Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles south (downstream) from the Glen Canyon Dam on Highway 89.  Make sure to look for the small "Horseshoe Bend Overlook" sign along the highway.  Park your car and walk 3/4 of a mile (a 20-minute walk) on a sandy path leading to the Bend. The trail is mostly sand, but it can be strenuous for some hikers, so carry water! SAFETY PRECAUTION Horseshoe Bend does not have any safety barriers at the cliff's edge.  Make sure to keep careful watch of your children and pets when visiting to avoid a treacherous fall down the 1000 foot cliff.
